Jacob Lawrence, Resident Artist Lecture 1969

In one of several lectures at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (additional lectures in 1954, 1970, 1989 and 1996), African American painter Jacob Lawrence presents a chronological slide show of some of his paintings, drawings and book illustrations, commenting on his interest in creating paintings with an economy of form, line, and color; his ongoing involvement with the picture plane; his selection of subject matter based on his experience; his working methods; the leading role ascribed to content in his work; his education (or lack thereof in a formal sense) as an artist; and the WPA, about which he speaks at length. Some of the works are identified by their titles.
