Isabel Bishop, Resident Artist Lecture 1963

In her third lecture at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, painter Isabel Bishop shows slides of a number of paintings and comments on where they fall in terms of the box-like manipulation of the picture’s surface. This manipulation makes it possible to pluck out different elements without changing anything else in the painting, and render a more continuous, flowing, sometimes transparent, illusion, which would suffer an atmospheric disruption if a figure were removed.
