Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle, Visiting Artist Lecture 2002

Abstract

Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle shows video clips and installation shots of a selection of his conceptually complex works. Some of the projects incorporate scientific equipment related to such things as weather, sperm banks, and sensory deprivation, while other works address modernist art and architecture, social and political concerns. The work deals with boundaries and borders of various kinds (personal and political) in conjunction with globalization, privacy, surveillance, identity and power. Manglano-Ovalle shares some autobiograpical information and talks about the importance of sound as a sculptural component of his work; his love/hate interest in the architecture of Mies van der Rohe; and the decisions he confronts about when his roles as an artist and political activist should intersect and when they should be separate.
