Henry Varnum Poor, Resident Artist Lecture 1960

Henry Varnum Poor gives a lecture talking about the importance of drawing and the role it plays in developing a strong artistic practice, referencing important artists who have influenced his approach to drawing. For Poor, one of the most important aspects of drawing is to capture the essence of the figure, or the anatomy of the subject matter drawn whether it is through the relationship between light and dark, or through the ways that lines and forms are used. Poor also shows a series of slides depicting his paintings, explaining how his work has been heavily inspired by art history; particularly the periods of the Renaissance and Impressionism. Poor ends his lecture by telling the participants to trust their eyes and be bold enough in their vision.
