Harriet Shorr, Resident Artist Lecture 1987

Harriet Shorr gives a lecture at Skowhegan talking about her painting practice. For Shorr, abstract paintings have provided her generosity with colour, form and scale. Shorr also talks about how being interested in making paintings in which the spaces between things can feel solid, giving an example of trying to paint objects on table tops. Colours are important for Shorr as well. They redefine visual sensations for her, and only painting can serve this for her as an artist. Shorr is interested in creating physical visual sensations with her practice as well, and talks about her practice of working with images of fabric and form to depict her paintings.
