Glenn Ligon, Resident Artist Lecture 1998

Interdisciplinary artist Glenn Ligon gives a lecture at Skowhegan spanning his interests in found collaboration, installation, photography, text, monochrome painting, African American writings, race and identity. Ligon specifically focuses on working with projections where he takes writing from specific essays and projects this material onto canvases to then transcribe them. This act of transcription allows for Ligon to find new ways of legibility and transformation when working with literary sources. Ligon also works with erotic portraits of black men, thinking about the context of these images to think about the construction of identity, visibility, and invisibility. Ligon continues to be interested in how images can re-circulate from the past to function in current moments of time.
