George Spaventa, Resident Artist Lecture 1968
Abstract
George Spaventa gives a lecture talking about his abstract and figurative sculptures. Spaventa works in many mediums including wood carving, plaster, wax, and bronze. Spaventa shares his interest in post-Cubist sculpture inspired by time in Paris, as well as explorations of figuration. Spaventa also creates sculpture from natural observation, which allows him to understand how to get the feel of the subject matter he is working with, and create work with immediacy. Spaventa tells the students how all his pieces are done in one state of mind, which means only stopping to work on a piece when it is completely done. This means that sometimes this process leads to sixteen hour days, but it is something Spaventa is committed to as a method to foster one consciousness to exist, and to see a piece from beginning to end. This intuitive methodology works best for his practice.
