George Biddle, Visiting Artist Lecture 1955

Abstract

Using analogies from the drawings of children and the insane, as well as several important periods in art history, painter George Biddle engages his audience in a discussion of idea that the best art in any age represents a balance between a representational, extroverted style and a stylized, abstract, symbolic, introverted style. The conversation then moves on to a discussion of government involvement in art at the national level, which includes opinions on a proposed Fine Arts Bill, the Commission of Fine Arts, the WPA, and the role the government plays in art in other countries.
