Fritz Haeg, Visiting Artist Lecture 2018

Abstract

Fritz Haeg begins his lecture by talking about the importance of conversations artists should have with one another, building community, and the role artists have to play in nurturing the people they allow into their lives. Throughout the lecture Haeg spoke about his time as an architect living in Los Angeles inside a geodesic dome, and his interest in ecology, gardens, design, and performance. Haeg also reflected on the travels he did as an artist, spending time in 15 different cities and planting gardens for families. Haeg then spoke about his current trajectory as an artist, living in Salmon Creek Farm, a plot of land purchased in 2014 which he now operates as a commune-farm-homestead-sanctuary-school hybrid. Haeg also spoke about the role Salmon Creek farm has played in his life in thinking about the global art complex, creating a space that surpasses individual projects and utopian thinking, and channeling the energy he feels as an artist into production and change.
