Frank Lobdell, Resident Artist Lecture 1984

Frank Lobdell is interested in exploring how the purpose of his painting practice acts as a vehicle to go beyond words. He is interested in going beyond words and also revisiting similar images as a way to create multiple paintings. Some themes Lobdell is interested in are his family relationships, time, and mortality. Lobdell also explores many different sizes in his paintings and spends time making lithographs and exploring colour. Lobdell tells the participants that he is always thinking about the history of painters who have come before him. Lobdell’s experience as an educator in Stanford is another thing he touches on. Lobdell tells the participants that teaching has informed his painting practice. He learns just as much from the students he teaches as he does the artists he studies.
