Eve Sussman, Visiting Artist Lecture 2005
Abstract
Eve Sussman gives a lecture at Skowhegan which talks about her interdisciplinary, performative, and collaborative practice. Sussman tells the participant about the Rufus Corporation that she founded, which has become a cinéma vérité moment recreating the famous Diego Velasquez painting, Las Meninas through film. Sussman also explores her interest in the breakdown of domesticity, making the transition from sculpture to video and film, and working in surveillance to be an observer of the banality of everyday life. Sussman ends her lecture mentioning her deep interest in Las Meninas because it represents the truth of how people are flawed, and how it’s important to always recognize our flaws.
