Emma Amos, Visiting Artist Lecture 1997
Abstract
Making no attempt to disguise her anger and frustration at being an African American woman painter at a time when privilege in the art world accrues to white men, Emma Amos declares, I am a witness to history; my painting is about what it’s like to be me, now, at the millennium. Amos’ spirited lecture, which includes examples of her painting, prints, weaving (which she viewed as a job, not art), mosaics and public works, is embellished with anecdotes. Topics include the craft of painting, communication, identity, photography, the figure, and race consciousness.
