Emma Amos, Resident Artist Lecture 1986

In a seminar which she called The Artist as Outsider: Black Artists’ Work, Emma Amos shows slides of work by a number of Black artists, grouping them roughly as follows: folk art, European art, African art, personal vision, American abstraction and the history of politics and monuments. This is followed by a discussion of what it means to be an outsider artist, expanding to include young artists, women artists, older artists, as well as the condition of art education in the institutions and the importance of finding ways to support oneself financially and psychologically by having work outside of art.
