Elmer Bischoff, Visiting Artist Lecture 1987

In his second lecture (previous lecture 1961) at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, painter Elmer Bischoff presents slides of his own work and of painters who influenced that work, including Old Masters and modern painters. The lecture emphasizes his training as an artist, both in school and later, and covers his progression from non-representational to figurative painting and back again. Considerable attention is also given to various elements of a painting and how they are integrated into a whole composition. Along with David Park and Richard Diebenkorn, the speaker was one of the key figures in a reaction against Abstract Expressionism known as Bay Area Figurative.
