Echoes Research Committee:
Li-Ming Hu on Andrea Fraser

Li-Ming Hu on Andrea Fraser (excerpt)

As part of the series Echoes Research Committee, Li-Ming Hu created a lecture performance with new gestures, intonations, and subjectivities from the sounds of Andrea Fraser’s Visiting Faculty Lecture at Skowhegan in 2008, reperforming the recording and working with the glitch of sound and transmission.

In an excerpt here, Li-Ming performs a karaoke explanation of Andrea Fraser, Project in Two Phases 1995, one of Andrea’s leading works of institutional critique.

Echoes Research Committee, is a series focused on Skowhegan’s Lecture Archive: What artists say in public—about their life, context, references and readings of their work—has always been of great significance in scholarly interpretation and art history. An artist talk developed into a format in itself as a glimpse into the intimacy of the creative process. However, articulating one’s own work is not an easy task. For some artists, the “explanation” may dismiss the work, whereas for others, it becomes part of it.
