David Hockney, Visiting Artist Lecture 1982

Artist David Hockney discusses a past conversation with a museum curator, during which Hockney observed that photography is a limited medium that can’t express layered time like painting and drawing, and is also one-eyed by virtue of the box viewfinder. This revelation led Hockney to experiment with Polaroid pictures and a grid system for bringing together numerous photographs of the same subject, with a result which he likens to Cubism and to drawing.
