David Driskell, Visiting Artist Lecture 2004

David Driskell gives a lecture reflecting heavily on his time as a Skowhegan participant over 50 years ago and his many visits through the years as a visiting and resident faculty. Driskell talks about the importance of building a community at Skowhegan, which for him has continued to last over fifty years later. Driskell talks about his memories of the Skowhegan founders: Henry Varnum Poor, Bill Cummings, Ben Shahn, and Sidney Simon, mentioning how they have become cultural influences in his life. Driskell reflects on the lesson Skowhegan taught him to keeps a visual diary of his travels, and ends his lecture saying to participants that Skowhegan will mark their life and help them move to a higher calling.
