David Aronson, Visiting Artist Lecture 1959

David Aronson gives a lecture at Skowhegan talking about his experiences becoming an artist. Aronson speaks candidly to the participants, telling them that their main task as an artist is to communicate their personal imagery to others. Aronson says that their message must have a universality without becoming generalized. Aronson also states that artists must express a varied vision to reach the differing awarenesses of different individuals. For Aronson, the key to doing this is to be simultaneously simple and complex. Aronson states that in order to arrive at these thoughts, artists have to have a broad and empathetic understanding of humankind. Aronson states that artists should strive to possess a continuing insight into their own inner structure and an ability to organize and channel their reactions into unified and orderly statements. Aronson ends his lecture stating that a significant work of art is the result of the most sensitive balance of many factors.
