Charles Long, Resident Artist Lecture 2005

Abstract

Charles Long gives a lecture at Skowhegan exploring ideas of abstraction and the relation to form and identity. For Long, jokes provide a space where he can continue to have faith in the process of making art. Long also mentions plastic and bio-morphism accommodating the body, and how this leads him to exploring new problems which give him the tools to create meaning in his life. Long is interested in creating a public place where the body is turned into an object through repressing language and representations of the body. Long ends his lecture reflecting on how the digital is something that can be scale-less, moving to a state of innocence and providing assurance to the viewer that it’s okay for them to enjoy putting together a story.
