Carol Haerer Wofford, Visiting Artist Lecture 1976

Carol Haerer gives a lecture at Skowhegan talking about her drawing and painting practice, and showing a series of slides. Haerer uses different kinds of painting and drawing material; particularly being drawn to watercolour pigments as well as silver, gold, and coloured pencils, all which help Haerer create subject matter that is floral and realistic. Haerer talks about being inspired by her travels and how she is constantly trying to discover light in her work. Some of the places Haerer has spent time in are the landscapes of Greece, the botanical gardens in the Bronx and the pyramids in Mexico. Haerer is also interested in using bodily gestures to create her paintings. Haerer explains how exploring colour is important in her work, especially white for it allows her to reflect on ideas of purity and nirvana. Haerer tells the participants that no matter where they are in their life, they must always set up their life so they have time to make art on their own terms and keep their hands in training.
