Barry Le Va, Resident Artist Lecture 1988
Abstract
Artist Barry Le Va presents a slide lecture featuring, chronologically arranged and grouped in series, work from the previous twenty-two years. He begins by expressing his need to work beyond the boundaries imposed by creating a finished object, preferring instead to emphasize, change, breakdown and disintegrate in his complex sculptures and installations. In the narrative which accompanies the slides, Le Va talks about the problem(s) he was trying to solve in the pieces shown, as well as materials and methods. Titles are provided in most cases. He also shows several drawings, explaining that he makes drawings as sculptural plans for many of his pieces. Most of the audience’s questions are unintelligible. The recording ends before the Q&A is finished.
