Armando Morales, Visiting Artist Lecture 1973

Armando Morales–an artist of Nicaraguan descent living and working in New York–gives a lecture at Skowhegan. Morales works in a wide range of materials including drawing, watercolour, and oil painting. Morales explains in his lecture how his work shifts from figurative motifs such as bulls, fruits, plants, trees, and vegetables into abstract compositions. Morales also talks about the importance that drawing has played in his life as an artist. Morales states the older he gets the more he values drawing. For Morales, drawing continues to influence the way he seeks to produce volume and roundness in his work, and how drawing also gives him the courage to think about three dimensional works. Morales ends his lecture telling the participants about the importance of always being a critic of one’s own work.
