Al Held, Visiting Artist Lecture 1968

Abstract

Self-styled realist painter Al Held lectures briefly on his ideas for making a more complex art in the near future, followed by questions from the participants. He explores the difference between pluralistic and sequential art; the impact of a knowledge of the history of art on the individual artist; and what makes for a desirable art education. He further discusses the significance of size and scale in his own work and that of others, as well as his abandonment (at the time of the lecture) of the use of color, the visual and emotional impact of which interferes with the complex dialogue he is trying to develop. The speaker did not show slides.
