Agosto Machado, Visiting Artist Lecture 1993, Part I

The Agosto Machado lecture is split into two parts. The first one is an intimate lecture in which Machado shows slides and gives a lecture talking about his experience living in New York and his role as an interdisciplinary artist. Machado also talks about the many influences that have shaped his practice, and mentions the importance of making work around the AIDS crisis in New York. Throughout the lecture, Machado pays tribute to his friends who have passed away: many who are artists and who have influenced his practice as an artist and performer. The second part of the lecture includes an invocation to filmmaker Jack Smith by 1993 resident faculty artist Penny Arcade. Arcade talks about the importance of Jack Smith’s artistic and writing practice and philosophy, showing slides of Smith’s apartment and playing music.
