Abbott Pattison, Resident Artist Lecture 1956

Abbott Pattison gives a lecture at Skowhegan talking about the various art historical movements he has studied while showing a series of slides of a wide range of artists as well. Some of the historical movements Pattison touches upon include Italian Renaissance, Ancient Greek sculpture, Impressionism, Cubism, and Dada. Pattison also focuses on specific forms in the body during his slide presentation, showing a series of sculptural heads ranging from Egyptian and Samaritan, to Indian and Chinese, explaining to the students the various ways in which they can explore portraiture through sculpture. Pattison ends his lecture by sharing some of his own works, including his drawings and sculptures. Pattison stresses to the participants the importance of drawing, stating that the more they draw the stronger their artistic practice will become.
