Constantina Zavitsanos, Resident Artist Lecture 2023
Abstract
Constantina Zavitsanos has an interdisciplinary practice that spans sculpture, installation, sound, and text. Zavistanos view themselves as an instrument that produces ideas through their chosen mediums. Zavistanos speaks about the importance of not knowing as an artist and embracing the things they can’t do. They reflect on this further by stating that they have a responsibility to produce a better world even if that means the destruction of the current world’s epistemology. Zavitsanos then tells the participants to reflect on the fact that their life and art are not so distant from each other, and to take seriously how blurry those spaces can be from each other. Other themes that Zavistanos explores in their work are the histories of performance and disability, questions of vagrancy, interference as a way of holding difference at odds, and what it means to resist traditional forms of work and not be able to work. Zavistanos ends their lecture by telling the participants of the importance of always figuring out their own ethics as an artist.
