Text

2018

Fred Moten, Paul Mellon Distinguished Fellow Lecture 2018

Abstract

Fred Moten structures his talk around the importance of having a writing practice that resides in an interstitial space. Moten defines this space as the difference between writing with and writing about, and how this has allowed him to write with works, write alongside with works, and explore collaboration. Throughout the lecture, Moten plays music, reads from his various written pieces, reflects on work that has inspired him, and shares personal anecdotes. Moten ends his talk by stressing the importance of always practicing; and how being in practice allows him to think in relation to spontaneity.
