Mario Ybarra Jr., Resident Artist Lecture 2017
Abstract
Interdisciplinary artist Mario Ybarra Jr gives a lecture that covers his wide-ranging practice over the years which has incorporated drawing, painting, sculpture, site-specificity, social practice, and collaboration, among other mediums. Ybarra Jr begins his lecture by reflecting on the six key mandates that have allowed him to develop an artistic practice: Intent, content, context, production, distribution, and documentation. Yabarra Jr shares personal anecdotes of on his experiences growing up in Wilmington California, reflecting on larger ideas of identity, class structure, and family history. For Jr, being an artist is seeking to express a notion of freedom, and to use art as a vehicle for our ongoing education that can lead to always being a life-long learner.
