Carl Ostendarp, Resident Artist Lecture 2016

Abstract

Carl Ostendarp talks about his artistic practice rooted in painting. Through a series of slides, Ostentarp talks about painting for him as a way of representing a third space, which is not rooted in representation but rather a vocabulary of symbols. Ostendarp also talks about the pictorial language for him being rooted in pop, minimal and colourfield vocabularies, and how he employs it to produce an immediacy of responses. Throughout his lecture, Ostendarp also references Black Sabbath and Edgar Allan Poe as being poetic sources for his work. Ostendarp also talks about his wife, the painter Gail Fitzgerald, and their collaborative work together which allowed them both to think about presence, scale and materiality as painters, and how this has allowed them to see how colloquial symbols can turn intimate. Ostendarp also reflects on the importance for him to think about the same thing a lot, so it can give him the freedom to have a clearer idea of how things need to be as an artist.
