Oliver Herring, Resident Artist Lecture 2005

Abstract

Oliver Herring gives a talk at Skowhegan exploring his interdisciplinary practice ranging from textiles, collaboration, and new media, Herring begins talking about his practice in textiles, particularly knitting mylar as a way to explore ideas of time and performance. Herring is interested in the discipline of knitting as a way to create accountability and work within limitations to expand his practice. Herring explores ideas of artificial boundaries for curbing information and expanding the limitations of these boundaries. Herring talks about vulnerability and bravery, and how they are two thought processes for him to hold onto as he thinks about his role as an artist in confined spaces. Herring also mentions his collaborative work with Rei Kawakubo, his video and participatory work and his photographic collages with strangers. These parts of Herrings artistic practice allow him to continue playing with the idea of seeing our three dimensional selves.
