Beverly Semmes, Resident Artist Lecture 2001

Former director Linda Earle and Beverly Semmes on campus, 2001

Abstract

Beverly Semmes gives a lecture at Skowhegan detailing her artistic practice which spans ceramics, textiles, sculpture, installation, performance, video, and fashion design. Drawing from her fascination with scale, gardens, flora and fauna, and her own autobiography as an artist, Semmes uses her interdisciplinary practice to create works dealing with the illusion of comfort; something that looks nurturing, but that is deceptive. Other ideas that Semmes explores in her work is looking at the relationship between camouflage and visibility, and dismantling the false notions that craft is not art.
