Susan Hall, Resident Artist Lecture 1980

Abstract

Susan Hall gives a lecture at Skowhegan talking about her painting and drawing practice. Hall states to the participants that she prefers not talking too much about her work because of the visual experience she likes people to have on her own. For Hall, the first impact should be a private one. Hall says that she draws from an emotional response to start her paintings, and then later gives her paintings realities by using structures that are visible in the physical world which is the only way Hall can make her paintings. Hall sees her paintings reflect different moments in time, drawing from motifs such as the moon, lighthouses, and landscape. Throughout the lecture, Hall draws from proverbs to explore her artistic process as well, and shares some of them with the students: Indecision is the key to flexibility never let your studies interfere with your education teaching is the fine art of imparting knowledge without possessing it if you can’t baffle them with brilliance, befuddle them with bullshit
