Elizabeth Murray, Visiting Artist Lecture 1979

Abstract

Painter Elizabeth Murray gives her first slide lecture (other lectures in 1985 and 1992) at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. It includes autobiographical information, beginning with her original interest in pursuing a career as a commercial artist and her discovery of museums and the fine arts. She shows examples of work from her earliest paintings up to her most recent work, explaining how her style developed and changed, particularly her increasing interest in using organic shapes. She spends some time discussing her views of the mainstream art world and how that affected her own work and outlook, both at the time of the lecture and earlier. Works shown are not named.
