Aldo Casanova, Resident Artist Lecture 1974

Abstract

Aldo Casanova gives a lecture at Skowhegan where he shows a series of slides by his students including first year and sophomore undergraduates and MFA graduate students. Casanova tells the audience at Skowhegan how he is interested in the way his students elsewhere explore the sculptural form. Casanova states that initially working with plaster allows for them to eventually explore other sculptural forms, such as alabaster stone. Casanova shares how he teaches students to transmit light onto surfaces, make molds, cast plaster, and work with wood. For Casanova, wood allows a composition to be explored through experimentation in different surfaces. Casanova encourages the students at Skowhegan to study wood carving, beginning with inexpensive wood for more experimentation.
