Philip Pearlstein, Resident Artist Lecture 1968

Abstract

Artist and writer Philip Pearlstein gives a lecture at Skowhegan where he shows a series of slides that depict his printmaking, painting, and drawing practice. Pearlstein explains how his practice looks at the theme of figuration while also exploring landscape, portraiture, and still life. Pearlstein paints from life without photography, cultivating inspiration from models. Pearlstein’s aim is to make the camera obsolete. Drawing also plays a huge role in Pearlstein’s practice, helping him build composition for his work. Another element that Pearlstein is concerned with is light, and what light creates in his paintings. Pearlstein also tells the participants of the importance of looking at other artists’ work, because they will learn about their own work through this process and what they do and don’t want to do with their work.
