Robert Mangold, Resident Artist Lecture 1968

Abstract

In this early lecture at the Skowhegan School (he spoke again in 1994), the painter Robert Mangold talks about how a visit to the Carnegie International sparked his interest in becoming a painter and led him away from a career as a commercial artist. He also mentions artists who influenced him, his explorations of non-traditional surfaces, spray painting, and the painting as a wall, with geometric shapes, particularly circles and partial circles, suggesting something beyond the edge of the actual work.
