George Grosz, Resident Artist Lecture 1957
Abstract
George Grosz gives a lecture at Skowhegan talking about his experiences as an artist, and shares intimate details about his life as a painter. Grosz talks about how the experiences of war influenced his portraiture practice, and how he draws on themes of trauma, psychological upheaval, and historical memory to create the figures that occupy his paintings. Throughout the lecture, Grosz shares the influences of many artists who have inspired his way of thinking, and ends his lecture by engaging in an intimate conversation with the staff and participants. Grosz ends his lecture by telling the participants that anything in life that they have to overcome, they will learn how to deal with it by sublimating it.
