TUITION & FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

Financial need should not deter artists from applying for admission. Skowhegan is committed to finding meaningful financial aid for all of those who are admitted to the program. We encourage you to apply regardless of your financial situation.

About Tuition

Skowhegan ensures that all accepted artists can attend Skowhegan, regardless of financial status. Approximately 95% of all attendees receive significant financial aid to offset the $6,000 USD cost of tuition.

There are a number of scholarships available, including general and named fellowships. Some schools also provide matching fellowships when current students are accepted to Skowhegan.

When considering whether or not to apply to Skowhegan, prospective applicants should not be deterred by the cost of tuition. However, in order to qualify for financial aid, you must complete the financial assistance section at the time of application.

Requesting Financial Assistance

We do not look at financial aid requests until after the class has been selected (though before admitted participants are notified). We will determine an award amount at admission based on individual requests, as well as other financial information requested in the application. Only artists who have completed the financial assistance section of the application can be considered for aid. You must submit this information at the time of application including accurate information on income and expenses when you complete your form. Each person who is accepted will be offered a financial aid package on acceptance. As with everything at Skowhegan, we keep an open door policy to discussing individual financial aid. If accepted, you will have the opportunity, if needed, to discuss your financial aid package with Skowhegan’s Director.

Skowhegan cannot provide assistance for other living expenses or materials.

If you are requesting financial assistance please take time to consider seriously your real needs and ability to contribute toward your tuition and fees so that Skowhegan can assist as many people as possible. Please also keep in mind that the $6,000 tuition represents a fraction of the actual cost of attending the residency. The true cost of going to Skowhegan is about $20,000 per participant, and those costs are offset by fundraisers and endowment.

Fellowships

Admission to Skowhegan, the awarding of general financial assistance, and the pursuit of all Skowhegan activities are implemented without preference to racial or ethnic origins, gender, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, disability, or age.

Fellowships are available for all artists admitted to the program.

Additionally, many BFA and MFA programs based in the U.S. provide tuition support for their current students and some alumni that have gained admission into Skowhegan independently. This support can be applied for in the matching fellowships section within the Skowhegan financial aid form. For more information email help@skowheganart.org.

Specific opportunities are offered to artists who self-identify as: LGBTQIA; Artists of the African diaspora; Asian/Pacific, Caribbean, Central/South American, or Native American artists; artists who live or work in the states of Maine, California, Ohio, and Kansas; and artists who are enrolled at Cooper Union and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. If you do not qualify for one of these specific fellowships, there are general fellowships available.
