Skowhegan and Socrates Sculpture Park announces: SkowheganPERFORMS 2023!

DEADLINE: AUGUST 21st, 2023

Skowhegan, in conjunction with Socrates Sculpture Park, is pleased to announce an open call for SkowheganPERFORMS, a day of innovative performance that will take place Saturday, September 30, 2023. This event will coincide with the opening of the 2023 Socrates Annual, the culminating exhibition of works made by the 2023 Socrates artists-in-residence. Following their lead, the thematic prompt for these performances is “transformation.”

We are especially interested in works related to transformations in nature or the local ecosystem. Performances should be responsive to the landscape and/or history of Socrates, notably the transformation of the park itself from a landfill to a venue for art. Each artist will receive an $250 honorarium.

Artists are also encouraged to use the works that will be on view as launching points to engage viewers and form a dialogue with the unique setting the park offers. Performances may be one moment, ongoing, or repeated over the course of the afternoon at various locations in the Park.

HOW TO SUBMIT:
Use the online form, and include:

  • A brief project description

  • Preferred placement in the park (see map)

  • Estimated performance duration

  • Links to supporting work samples

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND:

  • Families and small children visit regularly.

  • Performances should be as self-sufficient as possible and may require advance preparation.

  • Socrates and Skowhegan will be available for limited logistical/material support, and advance preparation may be possible, however, in general, performances should be as self-sufficient as possible.
