Philip Pavia, Visiting Artist Lecture 1973

Philip Pavia gives a lecture at Skowhegan and shows a series of slides talking about his artistic practice. Pavia investigates themes of space, history, light, and colour to explore consciousness, movement and space his interdisciplinary practice which spans drawing, watercolour, and sculpture; particularly marble and stone carving. Pavia further describes these themes, explaining to the participants that he divides the way he approaches art into two canons: looking for sensibilities and ideas. Pavia sees sensibilities as something when different senses come together to create ecstasy, and build ideas which artists can find and form over time. Pavia also engages with an intimate conversation with the participants, telling them to strive to always create masterpieces in their work. Pavia explains that a masterpiece is something artists see in your mortal life and never forget it again, and tells the participants to seek this out.
